This is a very heartfelt and thought-provoking article. I totally agree with your feelings on the meaning of Freedom. Freedom’s meaning can also have an individual personal meaning based upon the individual’s background and life experiences. Overall, Freedom is a right to be treated equally in the eyes of justice and law, to be free from religious persecution, to be treated equally regardless of social or class standing, race, or wealth. Freedom is defined in America’s Declaration Of Independence whose written words stated; “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Freedom also comes with obligations. We are morally obligated to have a sense of right and wrong, to treat each other with respect and decency, and we should instill that sense into our children so they can become capable and responsible members of our society. Our Freedom also obligates us to do our civic duty as Americans. That means we should not ignore or avoid jury duty summons or not bothering to vote in elections. Freedom does not mean you can rob a bank, promote hate whether in speech or action, destroy property not belonging to you, commit verbal and/or physical violence upon others. Freedom of speech is granted, but it also comes with consequences. Differences in opinions are a given but it should be done in a polite debate without threats or bullying. I truly believe that a discussion of your headline title of “What Freedom Means To You” should be discussed as part of a social studies class in schools.
