Birth of the “Night Falcon”
As Shan Po and Wuming walked down the main street of the village, Wuming inquired of the monk as to where were they headed to. “We are going to see my old friends. They are Feng and his wife Lin who are as you know, your adoptive parents.” Wuming was stunned and he immediately asked, “How do you know them?’ “How did you know I was adopted?” Shan Po simply replied that all will be known when they arrive at old Feng’s place.
Old Feng’s place was actually a 2-story traveler’s inn where food and drink were served on the main floor and the 2nd floor was where travelers can rent out rooms. The back of the inn was where the kitchen, storage building, and a stable for the traveler’s horses were kept. Feng was once part of the constabulary (an armed police force), who enforced the law and kept the peace in Hongcun village. He was forced to retire when he suffered a sword cut to his left leg that left him with a slight limp and an inability to climb up onto his horse. “Feng! I see that you are grayer and fatter than when I last set eyes on you!” Looking up from his accounting books to see who called him, he saw a familiar face laughing at him. Feng yelled out, “Shan Po! You disgraceful monk, you dare to darken my inn with your presence! Are you finally going to pay your tab?” They both laughed and embraced each other in the joy of a reunited…
