I Wanted To Be A Cowboy
When I was a kid, my heroes were men known as cowboys, cowpokes and cow punchers. They roam the wild western states in the TV images of my youth. They were like the Knights of old, righting all wrongs and defending the helpless. I dreamed of being like those manly men and of riding off into adventure.
There was a on call basis job on a nearby cattle ranch for an IT person available that was listed in my local paper. I thought “How cool is that? A chance to dress up like a cowboy!” A perfect opportunity for a retired guy like me to realize a childhood wish.
“I need to buy a Cowboy Hat!” I thought to myself. I hurriedly ran to my car to apply for the job and to buy a cowboy hat. Then my world stopped, as a question popped into my head. In order to buy a cowboy hat, I needed to know my size, and I heard of the 10 gallon hat. How do you measure how many gallons is your head? Is that by weight or how many gallons of liquid can your head hold? I could not answer the question. I gave up my dream and became a writer instead.
