I totally relate Chris. I studied under Sensei Peter Urban at his Manhattan Dojo in New York City in 1967 till about 1970. I had earned a Brown Belt in U.S.A. Goju Karate. Sensei Urban established the first Goju-Ryo school in the U.S.A. Goju-Ryo which is based on Chinese Kempo and White Crane Martial Arts. I stopped studying and going to the Dojo when the business of daily life took over and I had no time. Only my oldest daughter took an interest in learning Martial Arts. I was also “not Authorized” to teach but like you as a father I wanted my kids to have some knowledge of self-defense. This knowledge came in handy as my daughter faced the trails and tribulations of being a girl in her High school years. I have no regrets in teaching her. I felt that it’s one of my reponsibilities as a father. Anyway, a well written article, Chris! By the way, your last name is Ing and my last name is Eng, same pronunciation but different spelling. It’s funny but we are probably unrelated in our family tree.
