I liked the article, but I would like to point out that a major newspaper in China, The South China Post reported on this very story and that a poll conducted on China’s version of America’s Facebook called Weibo showed that 97% of its Weibo readers voted on the side of the girl to wear the qipao or cheongsam as she chosed to. Long story short, Younger women in china do not wear the qipao or cheongsam because it is out of fashion and out dated to them and they stated that any non Chinese person who chooses to wear the qipao or cheongsam actually flatters Chinese culture. Some of the women who voted also wrote about why a man, Jeremy Lam would be the appropriate person to bring a charge of cultural appropriation on something that he could not wear. Hong Kong, formerly a colony under control of Great Britain had decades of white British women wear the qipao or cheongsam. I haven’t heard any reports of cultural appropriation charges against British women. For those who may wonder, I am a Chinese American living in California. So, if no harm, hate, insult, and injury is intended or committed, lets “Live And Let Live” and chill out. It’s the girl’s big Prom night, she looks great, she should enjoy her experience of a important moment in her life and people shouldn’t be trolling her.
