I had worked for twenty-six years (1980–2006) in the Air Force Satellite Control Network (AFSCN) which was a branch under the Air Force Space Command. My job was as a mission control room station operator at various tracking stations around the world including the remote station located in Thule, Greenland (800 miles south of the North Pole). Our job was to track, command and control all manner of space vehicles during launch, orbital insertion, and other operations for NASA, DOD, and other governmental agencies. It was an exciting career and at times extremely sad during the Space Shuttle era. I am retired now and I have a sense of foreboding over Trump’s desire for the new Space Command and Space Force. I agree with you that there was always some military aspect of the U.S. venture in space but our agenda was predominately for exploration and scientific research. Now I’m not so sure if that will no longer be true in the Trump era. Thanks for the enjoyable read, Steve!
